When I'm not in someones putting line or really even close to it I usually mark with a quarter. If I'm near or in someone's line, I use one of those thin, flat plastic ones that can be pushed in flat so it won't affect their putt.
Sadly, I have a few ones with a pin that sink deep and never interrupt a putting line. Every time I get a "can you move that"? They're always putting 7.
Paid the 25 cents for a 5-ruble coin from a roll of quarters I opened at work. In Russia golf plays you! I have a 5 oz silver round that I bet people with. I think its worth somewhere around depending on the spot price. I'm a big fan of the collegiate poker chip markers with the magnetic marker in the middle. We sell them at the course I work at but I cant seem to find them online. They are pretty practical since there is a big marker and a small detachable one.
Like a lot of people I use two markers. A poker chip and a small metal one that comes on my pitch mark repair tool. Close to the hole or close to someone's line I will use the small one. Away from the hole out comes the big one. I like being able to see my marker from the other side of the hole so I can start reading the putt. One of my pet peeves are people who use small coins as markers even when they are quite far from the hole.
I hate searching for other players markers as I try to make my way to the hole. I will try my hardest to not step on your line but help me out, give me a chance to actually see your marker.
